Welcome to Fen&Cole, in Christophe Vuittenez's world of nomadic percussion: Cajons and Shakers!
All Fen&Cole creations are crafted in Christophe Vuittenez's workshop using birch, poplar, and meranti plywood. Plywood is currently the most stable material for sound and has historical roots, being used in ancient Egypt for furniture, toys, and musical instruments. Although this wood transformation method was forgotten for some time, it was reintroduced in the mid-nineteenth century.
All F&C cajons are equipped with either a snare wire system or a snare drum snare. The choice of the snare drum snare quickly became essential for Fen&Cole. It provides a livelier, more percussive play, and over time, the sound doesn't lose its vitality, unlike guitar strings that tend to loosen. Great effort is made to separate the sounds as much as possible, with minimal or no repercussion from the snare drum in the bass – it's clean and precise.
Various methods are employed to customize Fen&Cole instruments, including acrylic drawings, pyrography, photo transfer, linocut, paper collage, and gold leafing. Each decoration undergoes six layers of varnishing (no polyurethane) to protect it from handling, even under intensive use.
